Local Ministries
At First Christian Church Terrell we respond to Jesus' commands in a lot of ways that we call "Outreach". Some projects of longstanding are managed by members and the Church's Outreach Committee and Christian Women's Fellowship select a number of "Outreach Projects" annually. The projects are supported by donation of physical items and funding, special offerings from the congregation, in person visits and giving of times and hard labor. Though these projects may change annually, a few of them are described here in detail.
TERRELL SCOUTS
Scouting is a wonderful adventure that teaches young boys and girls to be responsible citizens, students, and family members. Both Pack and Troop 390 actively participate in the Texas Skies District of the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America. We meet Monday Evening at First Christian Church of Terrell @6:00pm -7:00pm. If you would like more information, please reach out to Jason or Alice. You can also visit www.scouting.org
Bag Ladies go to SMU (Southern Methodist University) 2025
Is a group of men and women who turn used plastic grocery store bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. The group meets twice a month (first and third Tuesday) in the "Bag Ladies Workroom" at the church. Through a labor intensive process the bags are turned into PLARN which can be crocheted or woven into all kinds of products: mats, pillows, bags, purses, caps. The ministry is no cost, takes plastics out of the waste stream so is an environmental plus and serves the needy. About once a quarter the accumulated mats and other items are delivered to a homesless ministry in Dallas where the "Bad Ladies" will volunteer for the day.
On Saturday, April 27th, 2025 our Bag Ladies accompanied by Pastor and Scott Gilmore traveled to Southern Methodist University in Dallas to hold a sleeping mat workshop for students who take classes in homelessness. We went at the invitation of Dr. Laura Robinson-Doyle, a Clinical Associate Professor in the Simmons School of Education and Human Development.
Dr. Laura had seen our sleeping mats at Our Calling when she took her students there to volunteer. We were blessed to spend about 2 hours that day with 40-50 young men and women who didn’t just come to class but wholeheartedly participated in every aspect of mat making: flattening plastic bags, cutting the bags into strips, tying the strips and rolling balls of Plarn, even learning to crochet.
Prior to joining us, these young people had spent an hour packing Blessing Bags (bags of hygiene and other items) with a handwritten note of encouragement tucked into each one. These are bags they and others carry in their cars to hand to homeless people they meet on the streets. They sent a supply of the bags home for us to distribute. If you haven’t received one yet, please ask a Bag Lady.
Other Church Outreach
For a number of years we have allowed other congregations to use space in our buildings that is not being used by our congregation. We currently have " New Hope", blessed to be able to share with other faith groups.
Nimble Thimble Quilters
A group, including members of our church, that is also in our buildings. They needed a work space and found it in one of our Family Center rooms, meeting weekly. Ladies who quilt for themselves and for others. The fees they charge to quilt for other is turned into outreach projects.
